Darren Miller just finished the 5th of 7 of the Oceans 7 Challenge Channel Crossings.

He was only the third American to cross the Tusgaru Channel in Japan, and the first in 22 years.

He did Gibraltar in May.

He plans to finish the last two in 2013.

I'm in awe of this, especially since I still can't swim better than 2:20/100 in a calm pool.

darren-miller.com has all his information on these crossings.

Andy, you have the makings of a marathon swimmer. Keep at it and you will get there.

Such a timely posting as only one person ever has accomplished the Oceans Seven, and he JUST did it a couple weeks ago:

I hope Darren makes it! He is sealskin tough!

Oh wow - Darren was going to try to be the first, according to his site.

Considering that someone only just did it now, to me, doesn't matter who did it first second or twentieth. It's crazy awesome.

I appreciate your confidence in me Yanti. Right now though, my skills and fitness are so wanting, I may as well dream about running badwater if I'm thinking about marathon swimming.

Oh wait - I'm just psychotic enough that I do. Cool

Oh yeah. It's still the Holy Grail of distance swimming. I don't want to do it, mainly because I am way too much of a cold wuss to swim either the Irish or English channels (the Japan swim is no picnic on that front either, but not quite as bad as the other two which just suck year round). I'm not willing to suffer through the cold acclimatization necessary to do them, and I'm not willing to suffer the cold during them.

Try to upgrade "just psychotic enough" to "seriously psychotic." Belief in the impossible is the first step in its actualization.
