Subject: How many ounces does a running shoe gain over its lifetime?
just recently tossed an old pair because they were way past being useful. Now, I only wish I would have thought about weighing them first. No real reason other than just being curious, especially with the sweat, mud, rain, dirt, dead skin cells, etc..

On the other hand, how much weight is lost due to tread wear, the wear of the fabric by sliding a foot in and out of them how ever many times, even the wear of the laces and holes from them rubbing on each other?

Just got a new pair of the same model of shoes, still in the box, so can give you a sample of n=1.  Old shoes have ~400 miles on them.

Shoe: Saucony Kinvara 5

Old shoe: 229g   8.5 oz

New shoe: 241g   8.13 oz

Looks like running is a weight loss program not just for the runner, but for the shoe as well.

My first instinct was as above, that the shoe loses weight due to tread wear.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
