Would anyone be interested in a 4 week open water swim class on Lake Norman? If so - What suggestions would you like to see in the class. ie. leave from what marina on a boat, 1 hour class or workshop, Saturdays, etc. I am helping someone put this together and welcome some suggestions for both beginners and intermediate classes. Do you think this is needed in the Charlotte market? What would you be willing to pay? Thanks for the help...

I don't feel that I would need it or be willing to pay for it but I would suggest the following...

  1. Organize the class into gradual steps, say...
    1. Confidence swimming in open water.
    2. Safety in open water.
    3. Sighting and course correction in open water.
    4. Going the distance in open water.
    5. Swimming with wakes/waves (use a boat to create wakes in front or alongside swimmers).
    6. Group swimming and contact in open water.
  2. I would avoid boats and ask to use the Lake Norman YMCA beach.  LNYMCA is on Lake Cornelius which has little to no boating traffic, is safe and is where the LKN Triathlon is held.  Otherwise, consider a sheltered cove like the one I live on or a private community beach.
  3. Avoid marinas for the obvious reasons...  Powerboaters tend to drink and don't have to be the brightest bulbs in the pack.  You don't want to be a headline.
  4. I would think people would be willing to spend between $5-10 per lesson/day/swim.  No more than $10 though.

There are ALWAYS triathletes and swimmers looking to get better at OWS.  And many people are afraid to begin to attempt/learn it outside of a controled environment.

I think it's an excellent idea that is definitely needed in Charlotte. I'm sure there are a lot of people that are interested apparently they are too afraid to say they need help with their OWS on a public board.
I think Saturday morning would probably work well with most people's schedules. You could either setup private lessons which would cost more and would go more in depth like helping someone get over their fear of doing a OWS or a small group and charge around $100.00 for 4 weeks. I think $5.00 is definitely not enough to charge. It's $5 for the open swim at Lake Norman Y if you're a Y member and that is just to swim not for help with sighting, technique, breathing, ows tips.
Also another suggestion maybe you could talk to the Lake Norman Y and work out a deal with them to either do the lesson after the OWS or on the other weeks that they don't have an OWS.

Good Luck!

I would be interested in an OWS clinic as this is one of my weak points. I am still a little intimidated by the OWS and spend too much time sighting in the bouys and pulling to the right. As far as what I am willing to pay, that really depends on how much disposable income I have left after buying cloth for the kids, books for college, gas for work, food etc, etc . My wife is ready to kill me with tri, 5K, 10, and duatlon event fees, not to mention all the other thing involved with this life. I guess something in between Bigfuzzy and lialog's suggestion would work for me, more than five or 10 bucks but less than 100.00. Pehaps make the cost dependant on the amount of people that sign up for it, this way it would encourage people to bring a friend and maybe get them involved with triathlon...just a thought please keep me posted.
Thanks
Andrew

Hi everyone GREAT POINTERS in here and thought about OWS!!!!

I am currently conducting a clinic in the Charlotte area for 15 people focusing on OWS basics from beginner to advanced multisport athletes. If you are in need of this or want more infomation please PM me and I will send you the information about the clinic and my credentials and references! Several of the members on BT have taken my class or been coached in some manner by me.

I would be glad to help and the lessons are VERY affordable!
