So, our coach had us do our first OWS tonight and it was a great experience.  We swam in Belews Lake (Rockinghtam Co., NC).  It's been cold (68) today and drizzly rain all day and the lake is close to 90 degrees, so there was this misty fog over the lake and it was gray and foggy ~ kinda like the movie "What Lies Beneath".  Anyway. I'm not much of a lake person so I was a little freaked out to be honest.

My next triathlon is OWS down in Wrightsville Beach and it's in the Intercoastal Waterway.  I'm from that area and I've swam (well, hopping from boat to boat looking for beer) in the ICW numerous times and the water there doesn't bother me but, the lake was a different experience! I'm so glad I got to swim in the lake tonight.

So, I just wanted to say "Thanks" for all the tips and advice I got here about OWS because it really helped!

Glad you had a good OWS.

It's kind of "swim at your own risk" here right now. Sharks are on the prowl statewide. They've closed several beaches on Oahu after a guy was bitten and several beaches here on the Big Island have been closed for about a week after some 15-footers were spotted.

Well, at least the pools are shark-free.

I used to fish Belews Lake regularly when we lived in Winston-Salem.  I can't imagine a better lake for an OWS - clear, clean water, very little boat traffic much of the year, abnormally warm surface water due to the power-plant cooling discharge (not so great in summer, but will be the first lake you can swim in the spring and the last to get too cold in the fall), and picturesque surroundings.

Enjoy!

Don't be so sure!
