But first my story. I am week 6 into an 8 week training program. My first Sprint is just 2 weeks away. About week 4 into my training I developed an Achilles problem. The injury is due to a number of reason. 1) Jumping into training to quickly (I should have given myself a few extra weeks). 2) Improper running shoes ( I was never fitted). As a result of this injury I really had to re-think my training strategy. I cut back 50% on all my running workouts and increased the duration of the swim and bike accordingly. I needed to build my cardio but running for an hour would have killed me. I can now run 15-20 minutes relative pain free. Instead of sneakers I am running in trail runners with jell inserts. I guess they provide the support I need. I plan to race in these but after the race I am visiting a specialty running store.

My question, in addition to the "special" shoes and jell inserts I also use an Ace bandage (the kind that goes on like a sox, NOT the kind that you have to roll on). Is it recommended that I swim with the ace bandage on? I know if I don't it will really kill my T1 time. But I'm not sure if a wet bandage under my sox will cause any issues….

Sorry for the long post it just has been an exciting and frustrating 6 weeks….

I'd be careful about racing on the injury, but if you insist, then I would slip the ACE supporter on *after* the swim, maybe even after the bike.  It'll take all of 30 seconds to sit down, slip it on, and then add your socks and shoes.

Running on a wet ACE just sounds awful -- don't do it unless you want feet rubbed raw!

Good luck on race day, -Sunny

I agree with Sunny on this.  From your posts on the Buzzards Bay thread, it sounds like it's your first triathlon.  Forget about your time and make it an enjoyable experience.  If you are healthy enough to race on the 28th, I'd put on the ankle support when you need it, whether it's for the bike and run, or just the run.  Putting it on and swimming with it sounds like it could be wet and uncomfortable for the rest of the event.

Good luck and enjoy the experience.

It may be best to do no running to let your achillies heal. I had achillies issues last year and I didn't run for I can't recall but 4-6 weeks. It effect my run training for 4 months and I stopped running as soon as I had an issue. If you keep training on an injury it takes way longer to recover and I find it isn't worth it.

Don't do more swimming to build endurance. Do more cycling if it doesn't bother it. Other option is aqua jogging or ellipitcal to build or maintain your running.

Why run for an hour for a sprint tri with a 3 mile run?

Most of all go into the tri with have best experience possible and enjoy it. If you are in pain and have to walk, walk...it doesn't matter.
