Subject: Options for a 650c tubular

I'm procuring a Spinergy Rev-X 650c for my tri bike, but it doesn't come with a tire. Now I have the job of finding a 650c tubular. What are my options and what prices should I expect? It looks like $50 is what I should expect, and also, I want to take it to my LBS to get it done up properly (no way am I doing this on my own, I don't want something as important as my tire getting FUBAR'd by my own inadequacy) and would like to know how much that would cost in materials and labor. Thanks in advance.

$50 sounds about right for a tubular.  I probably have 4 650c tubulars (Continental Competition) new in box that I'll never use (have a bike with 700c wheels now) that I'd be interested selling at discount if you're interested.

When I asked one of my LBS this weekend how much to glue tubulars, they said $120 if they had to clean up the rims.  This was a high end bike shop (e.g. only custom seven, guru bikes) though, so they may have been on the pricey side.  Also, if you are buying new and they don't have to clean up the rims first, it may be less.

Personally, I just ended up using the Tufo tape.  many will argue that it isn't the way to go, but it's worked great for me.

If you'd like to let me know how much you'd want for one (I really only need one) of your 650c tubulars, I'd appreciate it. I could potentially even pick it up in person if you're still located in SF - I'm located in Santa Clara.

Can you tell me more about this Tufo tape and the process? I've never heard of it, but I'm intrigued. I'm finding two versions of it on Google - regular, and extreme; any difference?

I think you'd want to buy at least two of those tubies... A spare would be a good idea.

Oops - was thinking about clinchers. Forgot that a spare is just another tubular. Thanks for pointing that out.
