Pretty cool post about the Kurt Kinetic "Energy" Trainer (aka 911 trainer)

Hook your trainer up to a battery pack and charge it.

Interesting idea.  If I could use it as a grid-tied item, I'd consider it.  I wouldn't use the battery bank often enough between trainer sessions to make it useful, but using my workout to offset the power consumed by the fans, tv and DVD player while I'm riding sounds interesting.

I was thinking sorta the same thing. Instead of hooking it back into my home's power, maybe use the battery pack to power a fan to keep me cool on the trainer. Are there battery pack's powerful enough to power a small or medium sized TV?

Basically any electrical appliance that I would use while doing a trainer session, it would be powered by the battery pack that is hooked up to the trainer.

A few years ago someone posted over on Slowtwitch of pics and schematic diagrams for a trainer that powered a television/VCR combo - I don't recall it powering a fan, or even if there would be enough power generated to power a fan, but maybe an electrical engineer will chime in; it really can't be that hard to do.

Ok, from the looks of the brochure, you would have to buy the inverter/battery bank separately.  This opens up the possibility of getting one that can run a TV.  Tube TVs are pretty fussy and require a nice clean waveform with a large surge capacity when turning them on.  Most inexpensive inverters can't do this, but there are units available that can.  Maybe I can convince my work to make me a guinea pig for this unit....

Disclaimer:  I work for Xantrex which manufactures inverters and other portable power devices.
