![]() Swim
Comments: I felt great on the swim! I had been having trouble with getting dizzy, but I realized this was d/t cold water getting in my ears, so the silicone ear plugs "cured" this problem. I didn't really draft this race; I was just trying not to get kicked, which worked (only kicked 2-3x); I didn't really consider myself to be "racing" anyone until after I got the swim out of the way. What would you do differently?: Next time, I'll probably try to swim a little more inside, or at least in the middle, but other than that, there's not much I would change. I'm happy with my performance in the water. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I only spent 0:20sec at the transition zone proper; there was about a 200m run from the water down a trail to the T-zone, which took most of the time. I removed my cap and goggles as soon as I came out of the water. Also, I pulled down my wetsuit halfway at the same time. What would you do differently?: Not much that I know of. Nothing really snagged up or anything like that. I felt really good here, so I moved pretty quickly. Maybe I would practive a little more on actually jumping onto the bike while still running, but not a big issue. ![]() Bike
Comments: I discovered here how much I need to focus on my sustained bike power. I was passed by many people, realizing I couldn't maintain what they could. This will be my focus at least for the next several months. My performance on this ride, and how hard I had to work for the speed I did have, affected my run and made it more difficult than it should have been, considering running is my strong suit. I could not find a gear that suited my endurance; the gears were either too hard or too easy...incidentally, I think this was a deficit on my part, not my bike's. What would you do differently?: I made my drink mix a little too concentrated, which made my stomach hurt a little bit towards the end of the ride. I should either dilute it a little, or carry water with me in another bottle. The good thing is, with it that concentrated, I don't need to have so many bottles with me. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Another person's bike was in my way, so I had to move his before mine would fit on the rack. I was tired here, so I was moving pretty slowly compared to T1. What would you do differently?: I think improving my bike endurance and efficiency would help the entire rest of my race. I was so wiped here, that it affected my speed in T2. I'm not sure of the exact time, but I think it was probably in the neighborhood of 2-3minutes. I don't think I did too much inefficiently here, just did everything slowly. ![]() Run
Comments: This was misery for me. I got slower and slower the entire time. I just kept telling myself this race was almost over and this is what I worked so hard for, but this was of little consolation until I could see the finish line. The only good thing about the run, besides its end, was that I didn't stop to walk at all. What would you do differently?: I think becoming a stronger biker will automatically affect my performance here. I was so wasted by the end of the bike that I had little strength left to pull from for the run. Running, though my strongest discipline, was my weakest, by performance, today. ![]() Post race
Warm down: warm-down? I stopped running as soon as I crossed the finish line! I had to stand for a while, b/c no position was comfortable to me. My legs were screaming at me, "what have you done to us?!" What limited your ability to perform faster: my inefficiency on the bike. I wasted valuable muscle strength and endurance that I should have been saving for the run. Event comments: I was so thankful for all of my cheerleaders! They helped me complete this race for sure. This was my first triathlon ever, and I am so addicted!!! Last updated: 2004-07-31 12:00 AM

Woke up at 0515, went to bathroom, prayed, took 2 Immodium tablets (which worked great); loaded car. Had a little bit of gel, but was afraid to eat anything of substance; this should probably change for the next half.
swam only about 25m before race, otherwise, no warmup. I was too nervous to do anything more. Probably should have, though. I was trying to observe a lot and make sure I was setting up my transition zone correctly, and get body marked correctly, and get my chip timer...
