I've been competetive swimming for the past 13 years, so I'm ok with the swim =) I have been doing tri training this summer but I was wondering if there was a site out there in the endless universe of the inet about first time bikers. like the do's and don'ts, when to change gears what gear to use how to maintain a bike???? I know nothing.
any help would be great.

thanks

try these links to start out:

i think two main tasks u should concern yourself with as far as bike maintenance is to know how to fix blown tires or what to do when your chain comes off from faulty gear changing.  both of these happen in triathlons frequently.  first look at your chain and all the parts that keep it tense.  play with them, figure out how it works and exactly what the derailuer does when shifting gears.  now take the chain off and make a mess of it (real-life condition)  now put it back on.  u can do it.  this is how i taught my mom before her first tri. do this several times till your confident u can do this on the road.  wash your hands.

I read all the sites, but do you have anything that lists the parts of a bike? the one maintanance article sounds great but I have no idea what the parts are that they are talking about
thanks

Take a look at this site and it may give you some help. Very basic, but a good place to start.

I would also suggest asking your local BIG bike shop about classes they hold. I know most larger bike shops and independently owned ones here in Houston hold classes all the time on maintenance and etc...
Also, the one way I learned was when I bought a mtn bike (I usually ride a road bike, but wanted to learn to ride trails) I asked them if I could come in and help them put it together. They said yes, and I went over to the bike shop one day after work and they walked me through it all and I learned about the parts, saw how they worked and saw how everything worked together.
I HIGHLY recommend this if you have the opportunity.
