I have a bash guard from Salsa that replaced my big ring. Very easy installation, just turn the upper limit screw in and it keeps the F Derailuer from going into it. Very easy to do. I ride some pretty rough stuff with very little smooth flat stuff so a big ring just gets in the way. The bash guard is just a bit larger than my middle ring so I instantly increased my clearance by at least an inch and protect the important stuff. If you need better directions let me know.

I am contemplating a change to 2x9 (44/29 & 11-34 rear) on my 29'er.  Anyone out there running a similar set up?  Any pros/cons that you would like to add in?

I can either buy the crank or redo mine using a 44 bashguard/44/29 - Anyone do this and run into problems setting front derailleur up to shift properly?

Thanks in advance.

I thought the bash guard was usually to replace the big ring, not be next to it? It sounds like you want to get the smaller ring in between what you have now but keep the big ring? What are your running now - 44/32/22? I would expect you could set up the limits on the derailleur but my first instinct says the difference between the 44 and the 29 is going to be too large and it might be clunky shifting. I could be totally wrong, though, because I'm the junior mechanic at my house.

My husband and I were talking about switching one of our bikes to a 2x9 but we were going to do away with the big one so we had 32/22- 11-32.
