Are Zipp Wheels Bigger?

Master  1485   |  Subject: Are Zipp Wheels Bigger?I overheard a conversation between two people at my LBS shop today. The one guy said he was have having a hard time getting a tire on his Zipp 404. The other guy told him that is because Zipp makes their wheels a slight bit bigger than other wheels. Has anyone heard this before? Is it true? |

Slower Than You 9566  Cracklantaburbs | Subject: RE: Are Zipp Wheels Bigger? There are minute differences in actual rim diameter from mfr to mfr. It does cause some tires to be a pain in the arse to get on. Some tires you can mount on certain rims by hand, others you'll break tire levers trying to get them on. It all depends on the combo. |

The standard specification for 622 wheels have an allowable +/- tolerance. Some manifacturers are known to be on the plus side (Zipp, HED) others on the negative. The specs for 622 tires also have a +/- tolerance allowable. Again some manufactures are know to be on the plus side, some on the negative (Conti). Macth a plus tolerance wheel with a negative tolerance tire and you're in for a workout getting that tire on, especially when new. |
