I have been following the Bt training program and have been swimming a minimun 1000 yds day  4 times a week with 400 yard swims and a series of 100 and 50 's recent training swims were 1300 yards and average @ 2:13/100 I am 6o y/o and overweight but making progress

Also doing at least 45 min aerobic mostly eliptical( bad knee) 3-4 days per week just started spinn class for last two weeks and  open ride only averaging  @ 25 -30 miles per week

Just did a practice open water  First time with new wet suite Xterra vortex John

Suite felt good, snug but not  uncomftorable ,entered water got acclimated and swam @200-250 yds  and my breathing started to become very labored did some breast stroke but could not get breath back continued to swim to guard boat had the back zipper released and started to swim back
STill no breath, fought throught to @ 50 yds from platform and signled guard boat for a tow

Got out of water and still could not catch breath started coughing and bringing up flem
Took a good 15 minutes to recover @ 85 % and even after @ 5 hour still coughing not as badly

I have heard stories of wet suite issues but this was uncomftorable

I am not asmatic, alergic to anything unusual and never smoked .I ran untill I was about 38 and still never had this type of response

Two questions : anyone ever experience this and can I just keep swimming in pool and see if my muscles can re train for the level of restriction !!

I had this issue at a race in May.
It was like an anxiety attack. The only thing that cured it was swimming in the open water....there is a huge difference between the pool and open water. I do not have panick attacks, never really had one until I tried open water swimming at a race.
I had been out in the open water a dozen times before the race but in water that I could easly just stop and stand up in. As soon as I got in water over my head and where I could not see I had a panick atatck. It felt like my wetsuit was squeezing me and my breathing was terribly laboured.

I went out and bought my wife a kayak... practised swimming in water above my head for 2 weeks 4-5 times a week, kind of an Open water swim focus. After that I was fine.
The wetsuit does take time to get comfortable with. You can bring it to the pool, but chlorine really harms the wetsuit so wash it immediately after getting out.

Thanks ff jeff

I will not discount the panic attack but I am a certified open water diver with a number of dives here in the north most in th eocean so I have a comfort with the water but could be the newness of this ows with trying to complete not compete

The original post does not say anything about how much successful OW swim training you have without a wetsuit, so I'm going to agree with Jeff and say it's probably not primarily the wetsuit. I'm scuba certified as well and it did not prevent me from having panic attacks in my early OW swim triathlons. Try some OW swims under similar conditions without the wetsuit (similar water temperature and heart rate) and if you have no problems then you can blame it on the wetsuit and think about getting a wetsuit that is looser around the chest and spending lots of time wetsuit swimming to acclimate.

Thanks  this was my first ows training it was in a small lake very calm and only 6 other swimmers

I will get back in without wet suit and figure this out I have the determination I just need to put more time in

thanks again
