Hi Everyone!
So, I'm training for my first sprint triathlon this August, something I've always dreamed of doing.  I've been training 5-6 days a week consistently for 7 months and have lost over 75 lbs along the way.  I'm feeling great BUT I went to check out the race course this past weekend and although I've known there would be some decent hills the course looks like a KILLER!  It has me really nervous and honestly a bit freaked out that I'm not going to make it up the course.  I know I can get through 16 miles, 20 miles, even 25 without a problem but 16 miles half of which is up some incredibly steep and winding roads has me really unsure.  Currently, I do 2 outdoor bike workouts a week that include lots of rolling hills but nothing that matches up with the course and I also do at least 1 spin class a week where I've been adding resistance to simulate hills.  Of course I also swim and run but I feel pretty confident about those two legs (I also try to do at least 2 strength sessions a week).  With a little less than 4 weeks until race day is there anything I can do that will help me finish the course without having to walk my bike up any of those hills?  Any advice is very appreciated!  Thanks in advance Smile ~Nicole

it sounds like you have a decent cycling base, why don't you just focus your last 4 weeks of cycling solely on climbing.  i think you have plenty of time.  if you can't find any hills in your neighborhood then pick up a trainer and do some interval work (ie. 5 on/5 off), that is what helped me the most with my climbing besides actually getting out there and doing the actual climbs.

If you can, go ride the course every weekend. Learning how to effectively work the hills can really only be achieved by doing just that. In my experiences, I've seen lots of great cyclists that simply just didn't know how to ride the hills, not from fitness, but from technique. My general advice is:
- carry your momentum up the hill (particularly if you're coming off a downhill)
- don't anticipate your gearing beforehand (unless its nearly vertical). I see lots of folks dropping gears way before its "time" and they just give up their momentum and spin-out. I gradually work my gears down: as cadence falls too low (i.e. <60 or so) in one gear, I then (and only then) drop down to the next gear.
- don't be afraid to get out of the saddle. You shouldn't feel obligated to do it as it can waste energy but mixinig it up between spinning up a hill and out-of-the-saddle climbing helps to shift the effort around lots of different muscles. Do keep in mind you may need a different gear when out of the saddle than when in it (I generally am 2 gears different when out of the saddle but this is hill-dependant)
- last but not least, don't psyche yourself out about it. Remeber the little engine that could? The mental game is part of the equation. Attack the hill.

No magic here, just need to train on hills to get better at them. By correct choice of gearing, you can shift the focus between muscular strength and cardio endurance to fit your particular strengths. Best wishes!

Thanks so much for your help!  I have to admit I'm not really good at shifting gears on the bike.  I tend to ride somewhere in the middle and stay there for most of the ride.  I'm going to definitely focus on those gears and trying to get more comfortable using them to my advantage.

hey first of all congrats on the weight loss. i am too was mentally overwhelmed by hills. i am a clyde-6'2 235, and the hills that i now ride are 5 minutes from my house. the particular route has 3000ft of elevation gain in about 5 miles. the first time that i rode this i did have to turn around about half way up. now it is sit back in the saddle and at about 8-9mph, that is up from 5-6 mph, i cruise up the hill. i am a sit in the saddle kind of guy, but i do get out of the saddle to stretch my legs and back. now i ride this at least once a week, and i actually like cranking it up a steep hill anytime. you can do it. it may not be easy at first, but dont give up.
