Subject: Cycle Recommendations...I think?
Just got my first road bike a month ago...a Giant Defy 2 - for 900 at my LBS.
Since I have been running, and swimming I thought I would jump into tri's and I did not want to drop a ton of money on a bike not knowing if I was going to enjoy it. Well after a month of riding, I am really liking it! First tri is Aug. 9th and I can't wait!!
Question is, since I do enjoy riding, and now or will enjoy racing in tri's will this bike be enough for a few years? Im not trying to win any of the races just compete. First a sprint, then olympic, half, then full.
So next year would you recommend just buying a new bike? or some key upgrades to the one I have. I dont think I would buy a tri only bike since I like to road bike as well.
This one was 900, and I cant, or my wife could not see me spending more than 1500-2000k and thats would be pushing it.
So is this one a keeper adding some key upgrades? And what would you recommend...
Or just start from 0 again...
thanks for all the advice!

I spent under 1K for my bike a couple of years ago and still ride it.  There are plenty of different ways to spend your $$ when it comes to this sport.  My advice is to give this bike a bit longer than a month before you start thinking about upgrading to a new ride.  Give it more time then you'll know which way to go.

Easily enough for the first 1-3 years. Put tri/aero bars on and your good to go.

I loved cycling when I first started out triathlon.

My $0.02:

Giant is a real value champion.... good frames and good builds. But at 900, you probably could get a huge benefit from better wheels .... not necess a carbon race wheel, but a Shimano Ultegra, Neuvation R28, Mavic Ksyrium, etc. Easy to see where the $300 to $600 goes to improved performance here. Chainreactioncycles.com and Neuvation and bicyclewheellwarehouse and your LBS are great places to look for wheels.

And you probably have an aluminum seatpost. A carbon post will be lighter, and absorb road shock.... will create an all around better ride. So consider a great saddle (try some out, maybe demo TEN saddles at a time from Competitive Cyclist or try a few from your LBS) and a good carbon post. Make sure the offset (ie setback from straight) on your post matches the fit you need for your frame.

Then, a better crank, chain and cassette.... after 1500 miles. Any earlier and you are wasting your OEM group.

But don't spend any more than about $900 ... or you start looking at what $1800 could have gotten you.... though your hoops, post and saddle will work great on your new bike down the road.

I am not a big fan of real tri bars on road bikes... but a lot of people do this... and some bars like the CGT from Profile are made for road bike geometry (and keep your weight back a little further over the rear wheel, improving handling in aero tuck position).
