Subject: Upper back discomfort?
So I went for an hour long ride just on paved trails to get used to my new bike and clipping in and out of the pedals...(I only almost fell over once!!! , I feel this is a big feat). I am just wondering about weight distrobution..At the beginning of the ride I was essentially putting all my weight forward onto my elbows and hands while in aero position...this was definately not the most comfortable position to be in and I started to feel it in my traps/lower neck pretty quickly...so as I was working it out trying to figure out how to get more comfortable, I decided to just take more weight in my legs and less in the saddle...This helped to relieve the pressure but I can sure feel my quads now...

What I am wondering is which distrobution is right? Weight forward or into the legs? I'm assuming legs because it seems like you should be trying to relax your upper body when in aero position...but I'm not sure.

Also I am wondering if flaring out the pads would help? I am quite broad shouldered for a woman (I blame swimming) and I kind of feel that sqeezing my shoulders in could be creating the problem?

Sorry if these seem to be a stupid questions or are just a repeat from somewhere else!

Forward weight should be supported by your skeletal system, not muscle.  Without pictures it will be hard for people to give you advice.  Though, most on here will tell you "go get a fit."

My neck gets a bit sore on long rides from looking 'up' at the road in aero.

Assuming that you have already been fitted, which means that you are supported by the skeleton not by muscular, most of the time, it's actually just getting used to the position. You should probably include a few hours of core strength training (sit-ups on balance ball, superman, stars, etc. will get you far), as this will have tremendous impact on how long you can comfortably stay in the aero position.

I had this problem for a while, and it really was my aero boars were to close together. After I got a new, wider base bar and moved my bars apart I have had no pain, and that is only change I have made.
