Subject: Prepatellar Bursitis
Hey guys,

Anyone have any experience with this? I think I developed it rather quickly last weekend when I was leaning on my left knee on the concrete to deflate my son's blow up pool. I went to stand up and my knee was the size of a baseball! Talk about alarming - I almost freaked! The strange thing was, it didn't hurt. I went inside and iced it for about an hour and the swelling went down, but then this morning I totally forgot about it and leaned on it for about 3 seconds to check my son's temp, and it swelled back up again. It's definitely been sore this past week, but I was still able to walk/jog a little and ride the bike.

Any thoughts/comments/treatment options are welcome. So far I've only iced it. Not really sure what else to do for it. It's not going to stop me from my Aug 22nd tri, but it's definitely got me thinking I may have to walk more of the 5K than I'd like.

Thanks in advance you guys,
tb

According to my doctor, that's what I've been struggling with the past 3-4 weeks.  It sucks, because I have my first HIM next weekend.

I don't have much swelling, but there's a lot of pain and stiffness.  The doctor says it's caused by repetitive motion.  I think I'm prone to it, because I've had it in my shoulder from swimming before.

I was told the simplest fix is to stop training, (yeah, right!) to ice it, and take over the counter pain pills.  If it gets bad enough, I understand they can give you a cortizone shot, or if swelling is a problem, they can drain the fluid with a needle.

I've been dealing with it by almost eliminating running and cutting back on biking.  I've just resigned myself to the fact that next week's race won't be easy, and if necessary, I'll walk on the run, because that's when I have the most pain.

Good luck!

I developed bursitis in college playing soccer keeper. It doesn't usually swell up anymore, but after my five-day backpack last week, it is swollen and hurts and won't go down except temporarily, after ice. Fortunately, most bursitis is, as you say, pretty painless, just uncomfortable. Keep icing - if you spend an entire evening doing 20-on, 20-off, it'll likely stay away for good.

I just got over my case of prepatellar bursitis. It actually was caused by a staph infection from having road rash about 4 weeks prior and for some reason kicked in one day. MD drained it and sent it in for lab to find out if there was any bacteria in it. Good thing they did and put me on antibiotics. Just something to consider if it doesn't clear up.

Ive had it for about the past year, military medical sucks, now im in physical therapy for it.  I take antinflamatories and they have me doing stretches, and they do ultrasound therapy on it.  It works pretty good, little pain, no swelling, and I continue to train.  They said mine was caused because my ITband either pulls or rubs the bursa sacks in my left knee.  I have no idea if this is true or not but when I start felling any pain I stretch my ITband and it goes away.
