Subject: Weight loss after race....
Hello everyone, a quick question.  Last weekend I did the Bridgeland tri on sunday and sat night and into sunday morning I was feeling the effects of a stomach virus if you know what I mean. ( both ends).  I didn't really feel all that great but I have trained for this damn thing for 6 weeks and with all the money and travel and not wanting to let my wife down ( she participated too) I was bound and determined to do it.  I did it, and completed it in a descent time.  So, here is the problem.  I lost close to 8 lbs of weight from the virus and probably any extra fluids from the race even with the hydration that was available there.  What is the quickest way to get those 8 back?  It has affected my training already, I can feel it.  You may think that 8 lbs is not a big loss, but I only way 150 lbs soaking wet.  Is my body just still in shock or is this normal and should I just keep pushing on?  Thanks guys.

my guess is (or what my experience in the past is): if it's weight loss due to a virus, you'll gain it right back in a few weeks.

Then again, I'm the type of person who could gain 3 lbs just *thinking* about a bowl of icecream, so I never have problems puttin ON weight...

Just take it easy for a few days and hit up some water and gatorade/powerade/whateverade. Diarrhea and vomiting will dehydrate as well as cause electrolyte imbalance. If it were me, I'd do almost nothing for 2-4 days and hit up the OJ, grapefruit juice, water, etc. as well as some extra carbs to help replenish glycogen and retain water.

focus on staying hydrated until you are feeling better. you will bounce back once the virus is gone, i'm sure. even at 150, 8lbs can go fast if you are having problems with nausea and the other.

I did something similar.  At the Goofy Challenge a few years ago (Disney 1/2 mary one day and full mary the next)  For the 1/2 the nigh before I caught some stomach bug and found some imodium right before the race and still was miserable.  Finished and was determined to do the full the next day.  I finished both but not very fast.

I think the run down/getting over the sick feeling lasted about a week and then I was back to normal.  I am sure some of that was from the races themselves but I felt the dehyrdation was the main factor.  as you just go through the next week or two you will start to feel better and the weight will come back as you get to eating normal again.  I did not have the need to consume a ton of extra calories, my body just eventually made it back to my normal weight.  I did lay off the training for a few days though too.

I would recommend cut back on the workouts a little bit for the week (think recovery week) or two.
