Subject: Swim stroke question?!
I have a sprint triathlon in 7 days. It is swim 500yds, bike 12miles, run 3.5miles. It is my first so I am aiming for a goal of under 1:30 and should come in around 1:22 if all goes well. Anyways, on the swim I finish in about 8.5-9.5mins if I do every other 25yds freestyle and every other 25yds breast and am pretty fresh when done. However, I can do it all freestyle and my time is only about 15-30secs better on average, but I am not NEAR as fresh upon finishing. Should I swallow my pride and do the breast/free mix to be more fresh for the rest of the tri. or should I push it on the swim for only 15-30 extra seconds? Any advice would be helpful thanks.

I'm not sure you need to swallow your pride to do a mixture.  Tons of folks do this.  However, in the long run you should work towards just the crawl.  You going to be in a wetsuit?  I find the crawl so much easier to do in a wetsuit in an OWS then in the pool.  You just float so well that it makes it so easy to use proper form and breath.

You're only gaining 15-30 seconds for 500 yards?

If so, you're better of being fresher.  You'll more then make up 30 seconds being fresher for the rest of the race.

That sounds odd. Something's up with your free; you should be a little faster than 15-30 seconds per 500...that's ~1 sec per lap (in a pool).  It'd be interesting to look at more info (how you breathe, stroke, etc) to see what's crackin with your free. Either you're a rockstar breaststroker, or there's free speed to find on your free, might be as simple as breathing on the two rather than the 4. But we won't know until we learn more.

Given what you've presented, do the mix. No reason to not be fresh. The swim is tri's warm-up, after all.

Depends on how you feel and what your future plans are. If you want to do more than 1, I'd try to go without leaving the freestyle stroke. You might get a little stressed, but it is good practice.

However, being your first, you'll probably stop swimming at times just to get your sighting right, which is probably a good idea.
