Subject: Want to do a tri but cannot ride an upright bike
Howdy all.  I am interested in entering a triathlon in the spring of 2010.  There's a local sprint tri I have in mind, followed by a longer one organized by the same group a few weeks later.  However, I have a glaring problem...I can't ride a regular upright bike for any length of time.  Carpal tunnel (actual diagnosis by a hand surgeon and a neurologist) in my right arm leads to crippling pain when spending more than a 1/2 hour on a road or hybrid bike.  The last time I rode a road bike was a 15 mile ride that left me in pain for 2 weeks. Clearly, this leads to some problems with both training and racing.  I've perused the USAT rules and it seems pretty clear that I wouldn't qualify under the "physically challenged" rules since my arm is mostly fine (I'm typing this, right?) until it bears weight for a while.

So here's the question - what are the chances a race director would allow me to ride my recumbent bike.  The bike is 30 lbs of comfort, I do not use any fairings, and the seating position is about as aero as a road bike on the hoods.  How far would a polite inquiry letter and medical documentation get me?  Is this a fool's errand, or is there a general attitude towards accomodation in the triathlon world?  Are all races under USAT rules?  Thanks!

I would just contact the race director. Worst case scenario, the answer is no.

As an aside, I have very little weight or pressure on my hands/wrists when in the aero position.

Yeah, in my post I failed to mention my ulnar nerve problems.  Elbow flexion near 90 degrees for extended periods is another problem, and it looks like a aero bars put the rider pretty close to that.  I can't say I've tried that position though, maybe I'll attempt a longer test ride on aero bars sometime.  With lots of naproxen sodium on hand!

I have carpal tunnel and it bothers me if I ride a road bike..but I can ride a tri bike or a bike with aerobars for hours on end. So I think you will need to either get a road bike with clip on aerobars or tri bike and you will be fine as you will have zero pressure on your hand/wrist.

I worried about the same thing but can ride 8 hours fine in aero position and am doing my second IM in 2 weeks. I plan on doing a 24 hour road race with my tri bike in Febuary so my carpal tunnel does not hold me back.

You may want to ask about recumbant bike but I don't think they will let you do it as it is I think a USAT rule and race directors get their insurance for the most part through USAT.

Another option is to have a road bike fitted with riser or cruiser bars. It looks stupid but it's gosh-darn comfortable and there's nearly no pressure on your wrists or elbows. I rode an old heavy steel bike with cruiser bars all the way through my first HIM.
