I have a lot of things to do after work on Sunday evening so I decided to do my 10 mile bike ride on Saturday evening after work. Sounds like a nice realxing time  eh?

I have only riden 3 previous times as I am very new to any exercise so I am all motivated in my packing of the car. I was debating if I should run out to the lake or go to a more remote and long highway which was a lot closer. Being it was getting late I chose the later. I parked my van by a local gas station and proceeded to do my stretches. I took my card key with my which I had to put in my shoe due to no pockets on my speedos. I thought that was a problem but soon to find out it was the least of my worries. haha!!

I planned on riding out for 30 minutes, turning around and heading back to the van. I started off on my Walmart Denali (not liking this piece of junk) and was about 15 minutes into the ride when my gears started to jump around. Really great stuff when you are trying to keep a cadence. 30 minutes into the ride I am still feeling good so I decide to go a little further until the next gas station and then turn from there. I made it to the next gas station making it s 8.5 split and turned around. Heading back and smiling since I am all happy, I hear POP!!!!!!!! lol My tire blew out!!!! It was great timing since the sun was just about set and I had not spare tube. I had not idea how far I was to the van (come to find out i was 5.5 miles) and only had 1/2 powerade left. I tend to cramp up unless I hydrate with it which had me concerned. I decide to ditch the bike in some brush and walk/run back to the van. At this point in my training I have only run for 30 minutes so I thought this will be my 1st brick session (or I should call it s stone!!). I walked about 20 minutes and jogged for about 55 minutes and finally made it back to the van. I got my wallet and immediately went into the store and hydrated myself. I was very suprised I didnt cramp up on the run back due to lack of fluids.

The bike was recovered and everything was fine. Amazingly I dont feel bad today. Just a lil sore in the back of the ankle but no pain associated. It was a crazy idea and I learned a lot from the experience but something good did come out it. It made me more at ease that I think I will be ok for my 1st sprint tri in 5 weeks. I know if there was a pool I could have swam my 1/3 mile as well....lol Maybe this is a new training method. Forced brick exercise....lol

Oh well, I guess we live and learn. I am sure there are some other out there with a similar story.

No I do not have any cycling shoes. Wow, I never thought of that possibility. I guess it could have always been worse.

I didn't mention this but the road was very very dark surrounded by woods on both sides. I don't know what this thing was but I seen a black sillouete and heard what sounded like an gorilla grunt (I know it wasent)....lol Whatever it was ran off into the woods. Talk about make you run faster!! I assume it was a dog or some kind of animal that wasent happy seeing a man in tri shorts running down the road.

I think I will stick to the lake idea since there are other riders and no gorillas....lol

Sounds like a "buck snort" that deer do when they're miffed.  Be glad he turned an ran.... you don't want to tangle with a deer!  Congrats on the unplanned brick.  Good Job, way to HTFU!
