Subject: Thoughts about hiking on a day off

I am just strarting to get back in to shape after a hip replaement (1.5 yrs ago). I would like to do an olympic tri early next summer so I am working on my base now (10 mile very slow runs on Sundays, 3 to 4 other runs during the week, 1 40 min bike, and 3 swims - .25 mile, and lifting 2x per week). I enjoy hiking but I it seems hard to fit it in. Am I foolish to hike on a day off?

I have seen IM or HIM plans that suggest replacing a long run with a hike once in a while.  As for on a regular basis, if the body recovers and you are not tired for the workout, if you enjoy it, do it!

Heh - check my logs. I train on my days off from hiking/backpacking!

In all seriousness, a hike is an excellent off-day activity, as long as you control for/factor in wear and tear on your legs. Before I was backpacking nearly every weekend, I was doing light 20-30 min hikes every Tues/Thurs, which are my off days from running, then a major (10 hour+) hike on Saturdays. Now I've had to seriously curtail running because my knees and feet are taking too much of a beating. I'll be back to running soon, though - snow is a lot softer to hike on, so it doesn't beat me up as badly.

So the answer is: absolutely, just make sure it fits in with your plan/schedule (intensity, duration, weight carried, etc.).

BTW, where ya located? Always looking for new hiking partners!

I love hiking on my days off.  Usually do Mt. Monadnock because its only 1.5 hours from home but I have spent many a day in the WHites.  Plan on doing Porky Gulch Classic (cyclocross) at MT. Washington this November so I hope to train up there as much as I can
