Just wondering if people have done both, and which was a better event?

I like steelhead better though there is more swag with Racine. Both are good races, I just liked the run at steelhead better.

I did Racine this year and drove the Steelhead bike course on my way there. Steelhead definitely has a flatter bike course, but Racine's is in no way hard, except for the bumpiness of the crappy roads. Steelhead bike is through more hard-scrabble country, crummy shacks and small blueberry farms, Racine bike was more scenic but not by much. my 2 cents.

How are the swims? Are either of them known for being calmer than the other?

Racine is Colder if that helps.  A couple years ago I did Racine (water about 53) and my friend did Steelhead (low 70s).  His swim got cancelled due to rough water.
