I'm looking to get my first road bike, but want one that I can keep for awhile (and without breaking the bank). I'd just about settled on the Trek Lexa SLX when I went to a couple shops and they all talked up the Madone 4.5 (all same components, but Madone is carbon) and told me what a difference it would make. I don't know if they're trying to sell me a more expensive bike or if it really will make a difference. Is it worth the extra $800?
It depends on the fit. The Lexa is a women's specific geometry which is typically good for short waisted women. That works well for SOME, not all women. Many women (those with longer legs)are better fitted to a traditional mens bike.
The Madone is a better frame and, truthfully, the bicycle IS the frame. I'd say yes; it's worth the 1/3 more cost of $800. The components are only accessories to that. Buy the best fram you can afford which fits you. Components, color, tires, etc. are all incidentals and far less important.
I used to sell Trek and Specialized when I worked at a shop. Hoping you found the bike which is perfect for you. Fit is the most important thing, then frame quality, then everything else. It's a tough lesson to teach sometimes.
