I just got back from seeing Dave Chappelle's Block Party, and it was just an absolutely amazing movie. It's part documentary, part concert film, part who knows...and just so entertaining. I am not one to normally post about good movies I've seen, but there hasn't been much promo for this film, so I am sure there might be a lot of people out there that haven't heard of it. It's about a big block party Dave Chappelle throws in the Bed Stuy section of Brooklyn. He invites people from all over, and performers such as Kanye West, Mos Def, The Fugees
(reunited for this event, mind you
), and many others. Now, I am not a huge hip-hop or rap fan, but I definitely do enjoy it from time to time. However, the musical performances in this movie are awesome and anyone who appreciates music can appreciate this film - it truly shows how music touches people and brings people together. There's also a lot of funny parts
(duh, it's Dave Chappelle
), and a few parts that almost brought me to tears.
I dunno, the movie just really had an impact on me. Maybe I was just really feeling the music or something. I wanted to just stay put in the theater and watch the next showing of it, but I didn't....
I came home and read some reviews
(I never read reviews before seeing a movie...i just check its rating on rottentomatoes.com
). I found that the first sentence of the NY Daily News review sums up how I feel about the film:
"Once in a great while there's a movie that's so funny, infectious and welcoming - a movie that makes you feel so good about America and the people in it - you just want to climb inside the screen and live there."
