Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am and out the door with my family by 6:30 for our trip over to Alton Bay. For breakfast I had Oatmeal with dried fruit, milk and yogurt(muesli) and coffee. I ate 2.5 hours before race time, and sipped coffee and water all the way up to the race start.
Event warmup:

Once on site, I did a short run just to get the juices flowing and slow down the butterflies!
Run
  • 1h 55m 49s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Despite being well trained and preparing for this for four months, I still spent most of the race just trying to believe I was really doing it! This morning my legs are my best reminder that it actually happened!
So much of racing happens in our heads. I really wanted to do this in 2 hours, and I focussed on that maniacally the entire time and never let up. I got what I wanted :)
What would you do differently?:

Worry less! Work just as hard, prepare just as well, but what I would do differently is really believe in myself and have more FUN! Also, I concerned myself with wearing the right performance clothing, and it turned out there was no one right way to do it. Next time I'll focus more on my personal comfort and less on the 'right' clothes for the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Ouch! I hugged my family and tried to go for a short walk because I started freezing up. Cleaned up, changed out of wet things and went out to lunch with my fans :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am really happy with my speed overall, but if I hadn't been afraid of the pain being even worse than it was, I could have gone a little faster on the hills.

Event comments:

I can't believe what a personal experience this race was for me, despite running with over a thousand others. I knew I had to be there for myself because there is no other way to do an endurance event. When the rubber meets the road, I had to make it happen. All of the doubts about ability and the way I worried that any minute I was going to screw up were the only impediments that existed. I would love to get better at the optimism factor involved in racing. In retrospect, I'm really proud of myself for not slowing down everytime I considered doing so. Having a training watch (forerunner 201) and watching my pace was incredibly helpful. I would not have done as well if I had not kept a constant monitor going. Next time, I really want to go with friends though. It's a long lonely race without buds to chat with, and people at Big Lake were pretty quiet. It could be because of the heinous rain, but I just didn't meet many runners who wanted to gab. My advice to anyone training for a half is believe that all you are doing is going to matter because it does. Every run, meal, rest, and visualization comes to your aid at that race. THANKS!!

Nice race Lynne!  I think you've got an even faster time in you.  Based on other 1/2 marathons I've done, the course is not the fastest around.  I'm betting at Boston's "Run To Remember" you could knock several more minutes off your time.  Congrats on breaking 2 hrs!

Great job, Lynn!  I think you nailed it when you said all the prep really comes back to mind as you grind through the race.  Also, now that I have my forerunner, I don't know how people race without one!  It's invaluable!  Do you use the training partner feature?  I've been using it for races, and I love it!  I can tell at a glance if I am ahead or behind my target pace - and by about how much.

Congratulations!

Hi Immyfish,
Thanks! Yes, I have been using the training partner feature on the forerunner. It usually makes me laugh though! It beeps to alert me that 30 minutes have passed, and hour, etc, and when I'm going too slow or too fast (what?). The first time it ever alerted me, there was a message that said SPEED UP and I thought it was telling me that I was at an all time high pace. Seconds later I was laughing my head off because I realized it was actually telling me I was a lazy bum. At Big Lake, the message I kept getting was SLOW DOWN, which led me to believe that I had set it wrong or something. But it also kept me moving! Sort of like when someone says, be careful, and it makes you just do the opposite.

How are legs today? Starting to feel better over here. I'm starting to wonder whether I want to set my sights on the next race somewhere, or just be a normal girl for a while.

Stay out of the flood zones! (I'm in NH too).
