I've been lurking for a couple weeks/months now, figured it was finally time to say, "Hi."

I'm running my first Sprint tomorrow, and training for my first full marathon at the end of July (and another in October). I've only been running for a little over a year, cycling since Spring, and swimming for about 2 months, but I've been bit by the bug, and can't get enough challenges!

I started running last May, did a couple 5k and 10ks, my first half marathon in October, and have been steadily whittling down my PRs with almost every race. I hope to do an Olympic before Summer ends, a Half Ironman this fall, and with any luck, a full Ironman next fall. I may be a little unrealistic about these goals, but better to aim high, I think, than not challenge myself. Also, I'd love to squeeze in a Tough Mudder or similar race before the end of the year.

So some of my details. I'm 46 years old, a police officer in Detroit (and a member of the scuba team). In the last year, I've been running 3-5 days a week, finished 2 rounds of P90X, one round of "Body Beast," and am now looking for something else to scratch off the list. Prior to that, I was a couch dwelling suburban dad whose idea of exercise was walking to the pizzeria on the corner, lol.

I started cycling with a big box GMC Denali and an old Schwinn Letour. I upgraded to a Motobecane Nemesis, then to a Quintana Roo Kilo, and a pair of Cervelo P2s (an 02 P2K and an 07 P2SL...Ebay and Craigslist have been very very good to me, lol).

PRs are:
5k=22:54
10k=46:18
Half Marathon=1:48:38
Longest Run (so far)=16.22 Miles

Longest bike ride so far is 12.5 Miles...mostly because I've only been cycling doing "bricks," and my time is limited. I enjoy it, just have been concentrating on running with my marathon date looming.

So wish me luck tomorrow, and I thank you all for the advice and encouragement I've gotten from these boards!

Well, I survived, learned a lot, and I'm HOOKED. Gonna try for an Olympic near the end of Summer, and maybe a Half Ironman in the Fall.

The swim was brutal. Water was 63 degrees, and I wasn't used to open water swimming and cold water. There was a strong wind and strong current, which also made it challenging. I finished the 500m swim in about 20 minutes (which sounds better than it really was, most were done in 10-15 min, and I was one of the last out of the water). The silver lining is, according to my Garmin, I swam a total of 874 yards, lol, because the current and wind (and my poor sighting skills) kept knocking me off course.

Transitions weren't bad. I didn't rush, and I'm sure practice could improve a bit.

I did better on the bike than I expected. I used my trusty old Q Roo Kilo with 650C wheels, and held 23ish mph, which is faster than my usual training pace. Garmin kept resetting, which was irritating, but I held my own until the bike out, where I had a little trouble with the pedals and fell, lol. Nothing like a noob move to keep me humble! Might have broke my wrist, not sure yet, lol (swollen and sore, but not bruising up), and have a nice road rash on my legs, lol, but gained some ground and passed more than I GOT passed.

The run is my strongest area, and while I wasn't anywhere near a PR, finished it in 25 min, which is what I was shooting for.

Overall, a great experience, and a baseline to improve on.

Official Times:

Swim 20:34 (229th...ugh)
T1 5:26
Bike 40:30 (88th, gained some ground)
T2 5:06
Run 25:20 (63rd, picked up some more ground)

OVerall 1:36:54 (160th out of ~550 participants...top third!!!)

Congrats! OW swim can be a butt kicker! I have been a swimmer for years and never really worried about the OWS until the second race this year when we had some serious chop. Was breathing water on almost every breath, made for a bad swim. My mind set took a serious beating on this race and it showed. I finished but it was a poor performance all the way around. I have made it a point to work on my OWS and the last race was great, I focused on form and didn't worry about time at all. I ran a much better race and even placed in age group. It is an addictive sport!
