Subject: Weight limits on carbon bikes?
I have a line on a Scott Plasma 20 bike at a great price. My only concern is that it has a “system weight”listed at 120kg, which is less than I weigh. I asked the sales people at two different stores (the one with the bike and a different one). Both said it shouldn't be a problem. I looked at the specs for my roadie and it looks like I'm over the limit for that bike too, but I've has ZERO problems with it. What says the hive mind...risk it?

Don't trust anything I say here...but...

The frame is not likely to be a problem, although it will likely produce more wear and tear over time and possibly fail (very unlikely to be 'catastrophic') sooner than otherwise.  Especially if you ride it hard a lot, sprint a lot, or ride over particularly rough terrain.

The wheels are a more important thing to watch.  Get wheels made for your weight.  They are much more likely to go than the frame, and popping a spoke or two (or worse) is not fun.

I recently offered to let my wife use my wheels in a triathlon but then had to begrudgingly ask her how much she weights b/c I knew it would be close. Man,that 2nd conversation did not go well.

I wouldn't risk it. If the manufacturer says x lbs is the limit. . . at a minimum I think you're voiding any sort of warranty. If an engineer tells me something is unsafe, I tend to listen.

The bike will be fine if you get the wheels rated for you.

Had my Felt Z5 when I was almost 300lbs (136kg) It was fine but I did upgrade (or is it downgrade) the wheelset to Vuleta HD set that was good to that weight. Kept them on that bile even after losing 110lbs. When I got my P2, I put those wheels on the Felt, wow what a difference! But yeah, I'd be more concerned with the wheels than the frame.
