Subject: Accuracy of Garmin 305 elevation??
Just how accurate have y'all found the elevation information provided by the 305?  I was wondering if I can count on the info in my training.  I know I go up and down some hills in my rides, but not sure if my overall ascent/descent figures are correct.  Anyone had any confirmation of the data?  Or is it not overly accurate?

it really depends.

vertical error is exponentially worse then horizontal error.  If your satellites have good spread and are located near the horizon, it can be pretty good.

I've never had any real issues.  Most of the error will either minimal or glaring (sudden 1000' jumps) and the smoothing algorithms in Garmin's software usually filter that out.  If you sign up for motionbased (it's free), and upload your data, you can check for yourself.  They have a high resolution terrain database built in, so you can either use the recorded GPS elevation, or have motionbased lay the 2d data on their terrain field and get a 'true' picture.

garmin 305 is not very acturate. in runs that start and stop at the same point I seen even 1000 ft difference between asscend and descend. that is why they came out with the edge that has attimeter built into it.

I have found the elevation in the Garmin Training Center graphs to be inaccurate. When I do an out and back run the graph is not symmetrical. The elevation should be the same coming and going right? I agree with Vortmax; when you put your data into Motion Based, the elevation is accurate. I have checked it against toporoute and g-maps and the elevations match up. Hope that helps.
