I am an ex runner, but had to cut the miles Waaaay down do to back injury. Been swimming and road riding - so thought I would try a Tri. My sister's wedding is on the Beach in FL at the end of April, since it is an evening wedding and I'll have nothing to do that morning and there is a triathlon in the area, I thought I would make it my first.

I've started my training on the bike and swimming and plan on only doing about 5 miles a week running. Has anyone else out there tried training for a triathlon with minimal runnning training?

Welcome to BT! Lots of great people and advice here. I did my first race last summer with about the same weekly mileage for the run as you. The run portion of the race became a run/walk for me. But there were lots of other people doing the same thing. It was great fun all the same. Good luck and enjoy.

I agree with Amy, the most important thing is that you get out there and have fun with it, Triathlons are a blast, and nothing compares to pushing your body to succeed. With regards to your question, I think you know your body the best, run as much as you can without hurting yourself. You may not have the run endurance that some may have, but you can still work on compensating for it by swimming and biking more. If you get to the run and have to run/walk, that is fine, I've seen a lot of others doing it as well. Welcome to the wonderful world of Tri, good luck with your event, and the wedding after.

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

Running endurance isn't really an issue for me as long as I train - running really is my favorite event, the issue is the repetitive impact may cause a reinjury to my spine, so I have to keep the miles low during training. I did see an article about water running, that may be my solution to keep the training up and still minimize the repetitive pounding.

Yes I agree, water running would be good for you as it will take away that impact you are concerned about. Good luck with things.
