Subject: new and advice needed!
Hi, my name is Nancy, and I'm a 41 year old wife and mother from New Jersey. We have four kids ranging from 5 -10 years old. I was a competitive runner up through high school, and a recreational runner ever since then, mostly for fitness, with the occasional 5K thrown in. Well, last December my husband who is 42 was diagnosed with composite lymphoma (a combination of both Hodgekins and non-Hodgekins), which threw us for a loop to say the least. However, I am happy to report that he has finished his treatment for now and everything looks great. Meanwhile, I was contacted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society regarding their Team in Training program. They recruit for marathons, cycling events, and olympic distance triathlons to raise money for the organization. I am really interested in the triathlon events: I think it would be so much more interesting and fun than a marathon, although more challenging for me, in a way (at this point , I don't even own a bike!) My question is, could a newbie triathlete, without even one sprint triathlon under her belt, successfully complete an olympic triathlon as her first event, if she trained enough? The first triathlon that TNT is recruiting for is in Hawaii in April 2008 which would give me 7 months to get ready. With all my kids in school this year, and being a stay at home mom, I do have the time to commit to training, but my fear is that I wouldn't have the chance to get any real triathlon experience (say, at a sprint distance) prior to the race since it will be right at the start of triathlon season. TNT will also form a team for a triathlon in Florida in September 2008, which would give me a chance to complete a couple local sprint triathlons next summer before the event, and "get my feet wet", so to speak, but that seems so long from now, and I'm really fired up to get going on the training and the fund-raising ASAP. So, my question is, what would you do??? Any and all advice is welcomed!

Thanks,

Nancy

Do it!  the OWS will be hardest since you won't have a chance to practice much in the spring - but start OWS'ing now in Jersey.  I did a sprint in May and just did a Spr-Oly (my first season) and it wasn't much different although I was like "ok, 12 miles on bike I'm done" but still had 7 miles more to go.... I'm sure you'd have lots of support from TNT and of course from BT.  training for the distances is completely doable.  You aren't going there to race and win - rather to race and bring awareness to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  have fun and enjoy the accomplishment of 1) beating composite lymphoma 2) raising money for such a worthy cause and 3) training and completing a Triathlon!!!

Hi & welcome. I definitely think you can train and be ready to complete an Oly by Spring. TNT is an awesome organization and they will get you prepared (physically) for the event but you need to be prepared mentally. I think you should start training with the goal of going to Hawaii and then if you decide you are not ready, TNT usually allows you to defer your fundraising amount for a future event with them.

Capitalize on your motivation NOW and get started with the fundraising and training. I think you will surprise yourself with how ready you will be and who wouldn't want to complete their first Olympic distance triathlon in Hawaii...that is awesome! Good luck!

piece of cake, 7 months for an Oly......no problem. just find a good training plan and follow it, if you purchase a silver membership to bt they have some really good training plans as well..... but if you have the time 7 months is more than enough time, plus you have the added bonus of a strong purpose and reason to compete.
GO FOR IT!!!

Go for it! Definitely! You have 7 months to train.
I've been a runner and am new to triathlon, too. I lived in Hawaii for 13 years. It's a great place to do a race, and you don't even need to wear wetsuit. Good Luck!
