Expert 1210 Near Tampa | Subject: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread SCHEDULED FOR 8/22 @ Fort DeSoto Just trying to find who is going to be there. I'm in. Did it last yr - it was my first race in 8 yrs. Great oranization and lots of fun. Looking to (PR) improve time by at least 15 mins now that I can at least run 9 min miles and have some bike skills. '08 time 1:27:40 / '09 goal 1:10:00 It is usually a crowded race - like Top Gun was a few weeks back... organizers are expecting over 500 participants Edited by TrkHilo2k 2009-08-11 3:29 PM |

Member 34 Florida | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread I will be there! It is my first tri and i am starting to get a little nervous! I don't know if it is more anticipation or concern! I am aiming for a finish, but if everything goes well I would like to be under 1:25. I can do 3:20min/mile bike, 1:55min/100yd swim, and at least a 9:30min/mile run. I can't change a flat though! |

Expert 1210 Near Tampa | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread awesome! my times were slower than that last yr and you can see my times onthe top. You will be fine. butterflies are normal. There will be a lot of people watching and taking care of participants. No need to be concerned. A good thing is that the swim is parallel to beach, not very deep (I guess that depends on your height too) use this thread to find motivation - your skills and abilities already will get you there. if there's one thing you want to be prepared for is your position at the swim start. Depending on the number of people in your wave it can be crowded with arms and legs thrashing all over. I suggest you stay to the outside even if that means you'll have to swim a little longer. After the first turn, the field usually spreads out and you can swim comfortable. At least, that's what I have found to work for me. C ya soon! |

Member 34 Florida | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread A couple of questions: Do we need to bring a race number belt? Will there be liquid provided during the run or should we bring a fuel belt? Is there drinks and/or food provided for spectators? |

Will there be liquid provided during the run or should we bring a fuel belt? Is there drinks and/or food provided for spectators? I guess these need to be asked directly to the organizer but I'll offer my perspective: * race belt - you can use safety pins * liquid - there have been several oasis along the route at every other Publix event. * for spectators - this is a Family Event Series sponsored by Publix. Most of the sponsors are food companies. I guess spectators can "sample" the foods and beverages. Clear as mud? Happy to help. |

Extreme Veteran 626 Wahiawa, Hawaii.... but now in Florence, KY.. | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread I think that the spectators are welcome to the food too. The people running the food booths usually walk around handing everyone they see food. The foods real good too, one of my main reasons for racing is this series... i still have yet to commit to this race or one in orlando. |

Expert 1210 Near Tampa | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread CAM, we're all here to help each other! As you can imagine, there will be quite a few military people from the area. Additionally, we do a few mock sprint tris here in the Fishhawk area and are always open to more people. Small group but lots of fun and a great way to improve. Just did one this AM Read the thread http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=165025 As far as not seeing muc on the swim, I think its worse on the lakes (murky). If possible, bring two sets of goggles to the race, one clear and one smoked - choose depending on the course and weather conditions. Plus, the swim is the shortest part of the course- just take it easy, swim your own race and be comfortable. You can leave the rest of your NRG on land. Good luck and c ya there. One more thing - get there early and get pick the best position in your assigned rack. Best to be closer to the "transition" exit. |

Sadly, there's not a whole lot of healthy choices there; still, it's new an dinnovative (get it?). It's past my bedtime.. I'll see u all there this weekend and, CAM, u r welcome to join our practices. Keep watching this thread for next announcement. |

Expert 1210 Near Tampa | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread Everyone - call upon your higher beings and ask for a slowdown or change on Ana's trajectory - otherwise, we could be in for a cancellation or a duathlon - yuk! Seriously - this first storm of the season, although late, has the potential to directly impact this event (hopefully no lives). Keep an eye on its track. If you're not a strong swimmer and the storm is here come Sat AM, you want to make sure you keep things in a SAFETY 1st perspective. Right now it is raining buckets in P.Rico. It is projected to cut thru Hispaniola (Haiti-the poorest country in the W Hemisphere), border the N shore of Cuba and head for the Keys (Thur) and then the FL W coast and panhandle where it could do more damage. Take precautions and be ready. |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread Um the trajectory has changed slightly just in the last 2 hours. Two hours ago, the trajectory had the storm off the coast. Now it's bearing down on Tampa Bay. Fun stuff. Still, it's supposed to hit us on Friday, not Saturday. Should be all over by the time of your race. Probably not a good idea for a Friday morning swim.

New user 15 Tampa | Subject: RE: Publix Family Fitness Weekend Coca-Cola Classic Triathlon - Sprint : Official Thread Oh that's just great, I'm already nervous about the swim leg and now we have TS and hurricanes brewing. I went to Fort Desoto yesterday and I have to say that it was the wierdest beach I've been on. Besides scaring the crap out of myself trying to swim thru breakers I thought it was wierd to see people over 100yds out standing up (kids included) and I couldn't touch the ground where I was that far out. What's up with that? Is the water normally that choppy out there, and how far out do you swim before turning to swim parallel to the beach? |

The swim is normally on the gulf beach (vs the bay). Might swim 50-60 yards in, then parallel, then another 50 yds to the sand. You probably saw the people standing on the bay side. Race will be organized around the fort area. New Forecast calls for "nothing but blue skies"... yeah, I can't sing. One reason why races start so early is calmer waters. |

We used to swim to it when I was a kid in high school. Now I'm afraid of jelly fish and shark so I don't venture out there. Ahhhh to be young and dumb again. |
