Subject: Pain on the bottom of my foot...
I've been training for the Santa Barbara, CA tri (1mile swim; 34 mile bike; 10 mile run) for the past couple of months. Last week, about 8 days ago, I started having a great deal of pain on my the bottom of my left foot, shortly after a run.

The pain starts about a 1/4" from my left heel (going toward my toes), is just on the left hand side of the bone on the far left side of my foot. The pain then radiates up into the lower portion of my fibula.

The pain is generally not present before my run, and surprisingly doesn't start to appear until just after my run. Then, it is extremely painful, and very difficult to walk on. The pain lasts for about 12 or so hours.

I am 13 days away from my tri. What could be causing this pain and/or how do I alleviate this pain to ensure I am able to participate in the triathlon on August 23?

Thanks for your help!

OK this might not be it but I had an old teammate who had a very similar pain.  He was having very difficult recovery problems that would affect him for hours, and eventually days.  He finally went to the doctor and found out that he had a VERY small stress fracture in one of his foot bones, and after long workouts it would become inflamed and thus the pain.  He was out for about 8 weeks so that it could heal.

I, of course, don't know if you have a fracture, and you're probably too scared to go to the Dr. for fear of him telling you that you can't compete!  Hell, I call tell you all day, "you've got to go to the doctor!!!!" but I know what that feels like.  But if you DO have a fracture and you injure it in the race, you could be out for months.  You might want to have it x-ray'd to be sure it's not something really evil. Worse case scenario you knnow how much Tylenol it will take to get through recovery.

Other than that I could only think of things like needing new shoes or too much heel-striking or needing to run/walk.  I hope it works out!!!!

Yeah, kind of sounds like a stress fracture to me as well. Unfortunately, if it is a stress fracture it'll take several weeks to heal and running is out of the question. Also, simple X-ray films don't always show stress fractures...usually they show up on a bone scan. I'm no MD, though, so it's probably best to get to a doc ASAP.

Thanks Aliclimb and Turkeyvolvo. I appreciate it! I will be trying to get in to see the doc today or tomorrow.

Hopefully it's something simple.

Good luck! Let us know what the doctor says, I'm really curious what it might be.

If it's on the outside of the foot (i'm assuming, left side of left foot), it sounds like the peroneal tendon, or nerve even. Might just need some rest, or PT, massage, etc. Good luck. Keep us posted.
