So I k nocked off my 1st 600m swim last night(at least since high school) and have a new question.  WHAT does one do to keep your mind occupied during the mind-numbing laps(25m pool).  I don't mind running, but I CANNOT do a treadmill or the track(other than for intervals).  For a few laps I distract myself with technique and balance issues, but I'm thinking it's gonna be miserable when I'm getting up into 1000m.  HELP!!

"I like to go swimming with bow legged women..."

 Other than that

  1. Sing songs
  2. Count up to a number, then back down (if you are not concerned with lap counts)
  3. Try and remember the contents of your fridge
  4. Play the Kevin Bacon game
  5. Learn your stroke count and swim with your eyes closed and try and open them just before the wall.

up to you really.

Picture the swimmer next to you naked.  No, wait, that's for public speaking anxiety.

I tend to let my mind wander (which usually isn't too good for my splits). If I think I went to slow, then I focus on my swim form.  Otherwise, sometimes I'll plan my next day, or think about problems I need to solve, or try to do the math to figure out my average split time from my current lap.  Mostly I try not to pay attention to how many laps I've swum or have to go yet.  On my best days, I enter a nice zen state of "flow".

Well, Their is a device called the swim p3. You can download music as you would an mp3 and listen while you swim. I forget who makes it, but you can find it at websites like swimoutlet.com under the electronics tab. Or you can do what I do and talk to yourself. Just don't argue with yourself.

I keep my mind occupied pretty much the same way I do for biking and running workouts (except I also have to count laps at the same time!). I pretty much just zone out and think about random things, all the while trying to keep track of my laps.

Sometimes I zone out too much though and completely lose track of what lap I am on
