Subject: Open Pro rim or DT RR1.1? Have a choice with a PowerTap SL 2.4

I have the choice of getting my PowerTap SL 2.4 with a Mavic Open Pro wheel or a DT RR1.1 wheel.  Any advice which one I should choose?

I am getting the PowerTap for $1199 including hub, computer and wheel above.  Is this a very good price?  Does anyone know where to get a better deal?

I think the price sounds pretty good. I got it for a little less through my LBS, but without my connection, the price probably would have been about the same.

I have DT Swiss, which are fine to me.

I have DT Swiss, too. Works fine but I've only had it a few months. I also have a PT built into a Velocity Deep V that has been bomb proof for 2 years.

Velocity rims are the best. Fantastic lifespan and performance. My experience with Open Pro was underwhelming; rolling over a stick knocked it out of round. I have a set of Velocity Aeroheads w/ Ultegra hubs now on my cross bike which were previously on the road for 4 years. These were built up in 1999 and still run perfectly well.

You really can't go wrong with Velocity, DT 1.1's, or the Open Pro.

One thing to be aware of is that most of the complete wheels out there with PowerTap hubs are not exactly the finest builds out there. They're mass-built at a place called Quality Wheelhouse, a QBP subsidiary. I had to rebuild my powertap SL/RR1.1 wheel soon after I got it thanks to a nasty skid in a crit race, but after I had it handbuilt by a good wheelbuilder it was trouble free.

So really, I wouldn't necessarily blame the rim. It's usually the build. Open Pros, 1.1's, and Deep V's are the kind of rims that will last tens of thousands of miles when properly built.

Word. I had 1 set of QBP wheels and they ran for ~6months before shredding spokes. I learned to build my own and have had terrific longevity from mine.
