Subject: Chain care. What do most people do?

I have been riding about 80 miles a week for the last year and a half.  I have two bikes a road bike and tri.  Neither bike have I done any maintenance.  In particular I have done nothing with the chain.

What should I be doing?  How often?  I see chain cleaners and lubricants.

What other maintenace do people do on a regular basis?  Thanks for any help

I try and clean and lube my chain about every 300 miles. It might be overkill, but I hate the site of dirt and sand in my chain. Just make sure you arent spraying the chain off with water to clean it without re-lubing it. The chain needs lube at all times.

I also try and clean my bike every couple of weeks. It takes about 15 minutes with a wet rag and an old toothbrush to get the dirt and grime off the bike.

You should likely replace this chain. Measure between the pins to see if two of them fall exactly 12' apart. If they're greater than 12 1/8" on center, it's time for a new one. You've probably buggered the cassette as well. Dirt in the chain will grind the cassette and chainrings like sandblasting. Check to see if the chainrings (front gears) are shark toothed or still like trapezoids.

You should lube the chain every ride or at least every week, clean it about twice a month at that mileage. A clean drivetrain is 10-15% more efficient than a dirty one.

I'm a firm believer in removing the chain and cassette to clean them. Others use a brush box, some backpedal through a rag soaked in degreaser. I like either paint thinner or citrus degreaser. I've read and had bad luck ruining hubs by spraying Simple Green on the cassette while installed.

There have been several threads on this here, here, and here.  Mainly you should be cleaning the chain and drivetrain weekly to monthly, and giving everything a good once over monthly to semiannually.  And get yourself a chain measuring tool to be more precise in assessing chain stretch that needs replacing.

You can clean the chain with a variety of products out there.  I use Zep (cheap for the gallon at Home Depot) in a chain cleaning tool that scrubs the links as I run it through. SImilarly with lubes there is a broad range.  I like Ice Wax, but it is really all personal preference in the end.  But a clean chain runs smoother, shifts cleaner, and lasts longer.

If you haven't done any maintainance in a year and a half, check the cogs on the front and back for damage.  If there is any, you will need to replace them (as well as the chain).

Oh, and I assume you have been keeping the tires pumped up at least weekly, if not every ride? I can't imagine that they haven't been topped off at all in that time!

You NNED to take care of the chain!!!!  Buy some good dry lube... Clean the gunk off first with a rag then drop a few drop of oil on the chain...Whats wrong with you??? Just kidding....

As others have mentioned, chain maintenance needs to be fairly regular. I am for ever 100-150 miles. What happens if you don't? When you get around to replacing your chain, your LBS will calmly tell you that you also need a new cassette and crank sprockets. If you clean your chain frequently and replace it every 3-4 thousand miles, your cassette and crank sprockets should last many thousand miles.

Good luck and have fun. I love bike maintenance!
