Subject: Tri2 Remember is...hilly!

Let me start off by saying I do most of my training on the Silver Comet, so it should be no surprise when I drove the bike route today that I FREAKED OUT! On the webinar, I heard there was "a small hill at the beginning" then its gets flat. That first hill is a monster! I guess everything is relative. The Swim has moved to #3 on my worry list, after the #1 bike ride, and #2 run after the bike. Yikes! Anyone else ride the course yet?

I live just south of Laurel Park off 129 and bike in that area. It is hilly but its not really bad. (Keep heading north towards Helen and you will find some hills).   The  good news  is that  once you transition  to Clarks Bridge Road is mostly down hill and you can get your speed back up.  Good luck in the race.  I wish I was joining you, but I signed op for the SC HIM this year and did not want to race the weekend before.

I drove the bike route on Wednesday.  There are two hills.  The first one is near mile 2.  It is slow and long (I estimate 1/4 mile), but doable with a little grunt factor.  The second near mile 4 is shorter and steeper, but has a little down hill to get some momentum going.  After that, is all rolling hills and flats.  In fact, ater the last turn on to Cleveland Hwy, It's all down hill.  So the good news is, once you make it past the first four miles, you've got it made!

I eat hills for breakfast.  What about you?

I think driving a route can actually make a route seem worse than it is. I had a few friends who drove the bike course at IM Lou and came back with such horror stories about the course and really got me worried, but when it came down to it, the course in Lou was definitely hilly but it was no where near as bad as the car drivers said it was going to be. I hope the Tri 2 Remember race course turns out to be that way for you too. Good luck. Try to put all your worries aside and just focus at the task at hand. Try not to worry about the race as a whole - when you're swimming think only about the swim and try to make it even smaller than that, think only about your current stroke and the next few strokes, don't get in the water and start worrying about how far the final bouy is, just think about what you need to be doing right now to keep moving forward. Same with the bike and run, keep your focus to the very immediate and it might help alleviate some of your worries. The most important thing is to have fun.

This will be my first race and I rode the course a few weeks back.  I found the beginning 4 miles challenging for a first timer (it was literally my second road ride), but once I got past that, it was a fun ride.  I just plan on spinning up that hill.

Good advice, I feel better about it today. Ready to get out there and whoop it up!
