Pre-race routine:

Tried to eat a bit more than usual to practice for the upcoming Half Ironman in Kansas. I had 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast and some apple at 4:25 am. It was a bit rough on my stomach. I think I'll try some different foods at the next race and eat dinner a bit earlier the night before. I ate at 7pm, which was too late.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 15 minutes, put on my wetsuit and did a few laps in the warmup area.
Swim
  • 07m 58s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

My goggles filled with water almost immediately, which really ruined a good start. I felt like I was in a fishbowl for the entire swim. It also made sighting difficult. I guess I need to fix them next time. I'm not sure why they took on water. It was like my face changed shape in the last couple of days. I still managed to relax and not have a terrible swim, but it could have been better.
What would you do differently?:

Try different goggles? tighten the strap? Fix the goggles during the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

A bit of trouble with the zipper and the wetsuit strippers, but nothing major. I'm looking forward to getting new shoes that will be easier to put on.
Bike
  • 30m 40s
  • 12 miles
  • 23.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike. I did forget to put my jersey on before the swim, so I was a little cold. Kept one of the guys from Playtri in my sights the whole time, which helped with pacing.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little harder on the second lap, but not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

The time wasn't bad, but I'm usually faster. Many little problems. Transition came up on me faster than I thought so I didn't ride on top of my shoes and run off the bike like usual. Then when racking my bike, the person next to me left their wetsuit hanging on the bar where my bike was supposed to go (bad etiquette). My running shoes went on fairly easily, but the tongue was a bit jacked up. It was just one of those times when everything didn't go perfectly.
What would you do differently?:

Recon the bike transition.
Run
  • 21m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

After a bad transition, my HR was probably up a bit and the hills at the beginning didn't help. My stomach was a bit queasy the first 1.5 miles, but settled a bit towards the end. I sprinted at the end to pass another racer from the open group. I thought my legs didn't have it in them, but it worked and was fun to compete, even if it was for 9th place:)
What would you do differently?:

I keep saying run faster. One of these times I'm going to actually do it.
Post race
Warm down:

Half mile jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach issues.

Thanks for the nice comments. I was happy with the bike, but I'm sure you know the drill, their is always some way that we feel we can improve. My run seems to be stagnating around 6:30-6:45/miles. I guess I need to do more speedwork.
