My husband has determined that if he doesn't get a road bike soon he's pretty much never going to see me again. While he's resigned himself to this fact, he still doesn't want to spend very much money. He says max $500, but I'm going to try and push him to $700. With that in mind, which bike would you choose for him? This is primarily for biking with a club and just with me. He won't be racing or doing tri's.

And now for my sister. She does compete in tri's, but doesn't want to spend very much ($650ish).  Right now she's using a hybrid, so almost any road bike will be a step up for her (in speed).

And one final question. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to get a cheap one just to put on my trainer??

Ok, maybe my question was too vague. More specifically, how many speeds does one really need? Especially if you're not really racing and will be doing mostly rolling hills with a group. Is 24 ok?

i would go for a 9 speed cassette in the rear so depending on the front either 18 or 27 speed..

is he going to want pedels and shoes also within that price range??

I have an entry level allez (sepcialized) that has a decent amount of miles on it with the tora group, and it has worked fine for me.. if you could get 105 great but how much will he be riding  1-3 times a week

He's probably not going to be willing to clip in. At the most I might be able to convince him to get power grips, but not even those right away.

He'll probably be riding 2-3 times per week, max 80 miles per week I'd think.

Thank you!

I have purchased two bikes from Bikes Direct, one for me and one for my wife.  Mine is a little pricer, the Immortal force,  than what you are looking for, but my wifes bike was around $800.  I got her the Motobecane Gigi.  This is a womens specific design and comes well equipped for the price.  I shopped around and it would have cost significantly more for a similarly equipped model from a local bike store.  You will be hard pressed to find more bike for your money.  The downside is you will have to be familiar with bikes as you will need to do some minor final assembly.  If you are not comfortable with this you can alway take it to a LBS for final assembly.

Both have performed great and I have no worries about the bikes.  Mine has over 2000 miles with no issues, my wifes is new this summer so it doesn't have a great deal of miles yet.
