Tri of the Champions
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 02m 38s
Overall Rank = 12/102
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/16
Pre-race routine:

Set up area, begin stretching, hear people say that the bike is first, the swim is second, the run is third (?!?!?!?), freak out and try to figure out a revised race plan.
Event warmup:

None to speak of
Swim
  • 07m 23s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't draft because there was no one around me in the water. Actually was passing people very well, especially because they all took a very wide line. I sighted very nicely today and kept on track. Had to stop for a second to adjust goggles (water got in). Apparently, setting your goggles while running is not the best method. Had to pause for a second at the water's edge to get my legs/lungs. After bike and 300yd run, I couldn't just fly into water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder over shortened distance. Find a better run race.
Transition 1
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

This transition was from the bike to the swim. Had to take off shirt and shoes and put on goggles and swim cap. I had brought my wetsuit, but didn't want to waste the time to put it on during the race. Most of the time was spent running through transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Find a better run race.
Bike
  • 29m 42s
  • 9.8 miles
  • 19.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Speed zones and turnarounds made it hard to keep a good pace. Normally, my pace was around 24mph, but had to go slow (under 15mph) in several sections. Short race and tight pack made not drafting kind of hard.
What would you do differently?:

Should have pushed harder when I knew the race was going to be short. And find a better run race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

This was from swim to run. Much of the time was spent running in and out of transition area. Getting socks on with dripping feet was no fun.
What would you do differently?:

Find a better run race.
Run
  • 22m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't take any water, which worked well again. Legs felt good. Lungs felt good. Heart not into it ("heart" as in "desire", not as in pumping blood). Plan was to keep HR under 165 for 1st 2 miles, then crank it up. Never went over 165. I went to the whip and my horse didn't respond. I asked the question and the answer was negative. All things considered, my time was fairly good.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. Find a better run race.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, wandering around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My head was out of it as soon as I found out that the swim was second. That, and the pre-race routine of going to a Dodger game and eating crap the night before.

Event comments:

Race not at all as described. Ride was much shorter, run was on much more dirt, swim had more running than swimming, and order of events was messed up and not communicated well. Splits were not available at the swim because "we came by too soon".

Everything was out of order because of the Renaissance Faire. They wanted us off the roads early so we didn't have to interact with them. Didn't they know about the Faire before that morning? How can you not plan for that? ARGH!

152 BPM. This was the race's first segment. Start of race required a run to the racks to get bikes and a run out of the transition area to mount up. I ran without shoes and put them on at my spot (good call). Was one of the first onto the bike.
Wind: None
Course: Was supposed to be a 12.4mi ride. Was nowhere near that. Really flat course except for two short hills going up and down dam walls. Many sharp turns, restricted speed areas, and turnarounds.

I noticed you got 9.8 miles. My bike computer measured 8.9 miles...I would really like to know the "real" distance of the bike segment
