Subject: Natural carbohydrates?
I'm trying to figure out if there's any sort of natural version of Gatorade/Powerade and/or Gu/Hammer gel type instant carb options. Even something made with sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup would be great! Thanks!

I do not believe that powdered gatorade is made with HFCS.

HEED/hammergels/Gu don't have HFCS either.

Gatorade/Powerade have electrolytes or in other words salts to help you maintain water in your cells.  They are not energy drinks.  You can buy the salts that you can mix with water.

As far as carbs, sure.  Fruits, vegetables, whole grains all have carbs.  For a quick boost your fruits are best.  If you eat a good mix of all three you will get both your simple and complex carbs.

I know GU does not have HFCS.  I can't vouch for the others.

try the stuff from Clif bar company. It's a bit pricier, but I really enjoy their products. Mostly organic.

If you read gel ingredients, most use something other than HFCS for their carb source. Maltodextrin is the main ingredient in many of them. Some use Crystalline Fructose, which is essentially HFCS in crystalized form. Some just list "fructose" on their ingredients, but don't say where the fructose comes from, so I'm not sure on those. From the ingredients listed, hammer gels, clif shot, carb-boom, and I'm sure a number of others do not contain HFCS. You could also try "Honey Stinger", which is basically honey with some extra maltodextrin, flavoring, and electrolytes added.

Check labels for a variety of powdered sports drinks - there are many of those as well that do not use HFCS. Think beyond gatorade and powerade.... Check running and cycling stores, or sports nutrition stores (like GNC and the like) and you will find a variety of sports nutrition products to choose from.

Also, if you use the BT search function, I know there have been threads where people have provided "recipes" for home-made gels and sports drinks, so you could try that route as well.
