Subject: Anybody been on the green bay bike trail?
I am going on a ride with some friends this weekend to Kenosha to get smashed and we are taking the green bay trail up there. I thought it was all paved but found out it has "crushed limestone" on it. I am worried about taking my only bike.. my tri bike. I am going to go ride up to the point where it has "crushed limestone" later this week but am curious as to has been on it and your thoughts on what bike I should use. I dont really know anybody I can borrow a mountain bike from or anything so please pass on any info about the trail. Thanks.

The green bay trail is not going to be your problem.  It's pretty hard packed and I've ridden it on a road bike before.  The shady part is the McClory trail up in North Chicago.  It appears to come to a dead end in front of the Great lakes naval training center but really you have to get off and go under an overpass towards the bombed out factories.  There is tons of glass and crap all over the street and it's not a great neighborhood.  If you do manage to find the start of the trail again, I don't believe the rest of the way to Wisconsin is paved.  I haven't ridden this part cause I don't risk the shady North Chicago part.  From what I hear it's looser crushed limestone.

You absolutely DO NOT want to take the McClory trail north of Great Lakes Navel Base. As was stated, you have to go through the bombed out factory area, yes, glass every where, but even when you get back on the trail conditions do not improve.  It's crushed limestone,  streets to cross very frequently with a lot of glass, and you are riding in the backyards of questionable neighborhoods for some time.  My husband and I rode it a few years back, all the way to the WI border and would never ride it again.

If you want a very scenic ride to WI and don't mind crushed limestone trails, the DesPlaines river trail is very nice.  You can get to it via the McClory trail.  Just get off the trail at Rt 176 where the trail connects with a trail that runs along 176 to Libertyville. (I'm blanking on the name right now)  The DesPlaines trail interests this trail.   Only problem is that the trail runs under the major roads and will be closed when the river is high (like now after all the rain we've had).

I believe that connecting trail is the north shore bike path.  It's not labeled from the McClory trail but you'll see a trail split off and go down a hill on your left just before you get to a little covered bridge (assuming you are going north).  The Des plaines river trail is awesome but is west of 94 so it's a little out of the way if you are going to Kenosha.  Definitely a better ride then the McClory trail though if you have a mountain bike.

Well the ride wasnt too bad. The limestone was real soft up by the border from all the rain but if wasnt too bad. The neighborhoods werent real nice in North Chicago and Waukegan but I have spent 18 months in Iraq so it was ok. I actually wouldnt mind doing it again since it was a fun ride and we got wasted in Kenosha.
