How’s it going people? 1 week into training.

It seems I am very unfit. I am trying to build a good base. Is the Gym ok for the moment or is it better to run outdoors.

This is my program at the moment. I would appreciate any advice.

I can only swim about 200m and that is not continual. (Always after all of the rest below)

I do 20min on a treadmill

I do 20min on a bike

I also do 20min on an Elliptical trainer.

30min of weights on 1 body part per day.

Good news is that I lost 6lb and 2% body fat in my first week. 36 to go!

I am an intense sort of person and maybe I panic a bit. I plan to train for at least 8 months before attempting a Tri.

3 to 4 times a week I would say is realistic for the Gym. I plan to start running on the mornings that I cant get to the Gym so I can get some exercise every day. My biggest problem is I am an Engineer and spend most of my day at my desk.

I am planning to keep Sunday as a rest day.

Subject: heres an idea.

why don't u bring a stationary bike to your desk?...u don't really need that silly chair anyway.  just make a desk out of the handlebar area and viola - u have one work-out done by the time work is over.

if u start getting up into more minutes for the swim/bike/run back-to-back, u MAY start getting tired...in essence your doing several brick workouts.  if that happens, u may want to split up running and biking for separate days.  if it's working now as of your schedule and u feel good, then keep it up.  if u hit a wall later and feel beat-up, then split'em up.

I concur with Ron, much like yourself Irish, I was out of shape and decided training for a tri was the motivation I needed. I started back in June, and was trying to swim, run, lift, bike daily. After about a month, I felt like crap. I was tired and found myself run down. Now that I split up my workouts, its made a huge difference, much more energy. I still swim and run on the same day once a week, but I swim in the am and run in the pm and I lift 3 days a week. Good luck and don't burn yourself out.

Don't Give up! After three weeks it will be a habit. Be sure to keep a journal of what you are doing and how you feel after your work out. After a couple of months look back at where you started and compare where you are at, you will get inspired again.

Still Tri'n
Michael
