No reports of damage but it just happened an hour ago, and like, REALLY not what was needed right about now

Google has good links from its homepage about contributing to emergency efforts. Please remember that Japan is always one of the first countries in this region to respond whenever there is a disaster, and its "military" -- not an armed force, which is really a large emergency-response and peacekeeping force -- is very quick to respond and help internationally as well.

I have a friend working in Japan, but thankfully she's on one of the southwest islands.  I wonder how long she will stay, though.  All it will take is one meltdown and the wind changing direction for her to be in real trouble, too.  This stuff with the fuel rods is not going to go well, I fear.

Thanks for the update - I have been keeping my eye on everything taking place and it is so devastating.  One news report I heard is that most areas experience an aftershock of around 85% of the power of the initial quake - I don't think that one has hit yet.

A very good friend and her husband lives in Shibuya, one of the busiest area in Tokyo.  Now I am worried.
