As a background- using a consultant, (ok start swearing now) handed a draft report with invoice, told as part payment, remainder to come after completion of amendments, just got bill for amended doc approx 20k over allowed budget!!!!!

Question- How do I approach th econversation with the head cheese about the blow out. It was a misunderstanding on my part about where we were at in the projetc but they managed to spend the total budget without room for amendments. told them I had a tight budget to begin with. WHAT TO DO??? Should I book my flight to russia now???

Develpe a plan to mitigate the problem. Tell you boss about the error and that you are doing A, B, and C, to try to rectify it (don't forget to talk to the contractor - ask for a break somewhere.... Ask him for help, but only apologize once. Get everyone in the fix. Depends on the boss, your company's pocket book and the importance of the project...

Good luck.

Already been given a 15% break on the work done out of good will. If they were not so far from the mark in the first place it should not have taken so long to correct. The rub is, I wasn't even suppose to be looking after the F^%$ing thing in the first place.

1. Gorgeous husky in your avatar. Is it your dog? My husky is my running buddy.

2. You need to write out what happened. Own what you own, figure out a plan to fix it then go in and just tell the truth head high. It sucks to own up to your errors and you may get the boot for it but it's better to own up now then wait longer and make it worse in the end. Make it clear that you own your part and also make what you do not own very clear as well and make sure all parties are confronted.

You also need to talk to the consultant and ask them what part of "tight budget" did they not understand? Don't put it like that but honestly consultants should know better (I was a consultant for years in computer training).

Thanks for the advice. I have no problem telling my boss about it, but I am having a meeting with the consultant tomorrow to talk it through. Crying works don't it? It has fo staff I have worked with in the past. I had a crappy nights slepp of course, all I could think about, now I am back at work and planning my next move. No doubt another restless night ahead. In some ways i would love a change, as the job has moved far away from what I was originally employed to do. Evolution ain't such a wonderful thing.
