I am on a business trip this week. Monday night, I packed for 3 nights away including the jewelry and accessories to go with my various outfits. So.....Wednesday morning, I was at the hotel and looked in my suitcase for the jewelry box and........no jewelry box! I took everything out of the suitcase looking for it......still no jewelry box! I called my mom and asked her to go to my house and look to see if I mistakenly left it sitting on my dresser or something. No. So.....that means that the TSA jamoke who searched my bag at the Detroit airport now has my jewelry! Of course I have no proof. I'm only missing about $300 worth of necklaces and earrings.....

I guess the lesson here is that you should never pack anything like that.... put it in your purse or carry-on. I know that now....

The one thing that makes me suspicious is that I was "lucky" enough to be upgraded to first class. As a result, they put some sort of special yellow tag on my luggage when I checked in. Now, I'm thinking that the searchers must think, "first class, let's check for valuables..."

My jewelry's gone. It was worth more in sentimental value than retail value. (2 gold necklaces. The rest was costume jewelry) I'm just ticked off and want to pass on the warning to any of you that may be traveling soon.

Did they leave a tag in your luggage saying they had searched it?  When we came back from Florida, there was a tag in Patti's suitcase because it had gotten pulled for random search.  Despite the fact that you have no proof, I'd still contact the airline regarding your suspicion.

Most bogus... it's a bad week for stuff like that.  I actually had a friend get an engagement ring stolen out of his luggage just a few days ago (yes I know, insane to check that, but it's a long story)... without a doubt hassle the airline about that.

You can file two seperate reports, one with the airline and one with the TSA. They will then start to argue about who was responsible. Here's a link to the TSA claims managment office.

I had a digital camera swiped out of my bag at the TSA search in LaGuardia a year or so ago. Eventually, the TSA sent me a check for half and the airline sent me a check for the other half of the value. Didn't replace the 50+ digital photos of my vacation that were on the camera, though.

Think about it: I traveled for two weeks, through seven countries, on buses and trains and planes. When was my property stolen? The instant I returned to the US and handed it over to the Transportation Security Administration.
