Comments: I thoroughly enjoyed this ride. It was my first organized century. Road with a large group for the first half and then broke off and road solo for the second half. Really wanted to take my time and see the countryside. Road past a deserted railyard which had a steam powered turntable, so cool. Lots of outstanding farm vistas and the peach orchards smelled wonderful. What would you do differently?: Got caught up in a pretty fast group for about 20 miles. These guys were averaging 22-25 which is way too fast for me. Need to be more careful with HR zone and with hydration but overall both worked out pretty well. My seat broke at mile 52 and I didn't get it fixed properly until mile 70. A lot of standing and a lot of poor fit riding. Shot the heck out of my legs. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Had some ice tea and then was "stretched out" by some trainers from Carolina Sportscare. What limited your ability to perform faster: Have been riding the tri bike only and chose the road bike for this ride and my legs could tell the difference. Event comments: Good eye opener for IM distance training. Seeing how I've never run a marathon either I can only guess that today I would have probably mostly walked after the ride. But this tells me that it's important to slow down and save the legs. At 7-7.5 hrs per IM bike distance my legs would have probably been a little better. Still got a long, long way to go. Got up at 0530 (regular time). Had plenty of time to load bike, pack needed gear and have some oatmeal for breakfast.
Just changed shoes, loaded water bottles onto bike and packed my pockets full of gels, Clif bars, chapstick, enduralytes, and oh yeah motrin.
