Well, here I go. No turning back now. The race and the course I believe are still and issue for the organizers, but I am in 100%. Training began last week. Really looking forward to both the training and the race itself. This is something I have thought about for a long time. I am 43 now, will be 44 next month, but I am in some of the best shape I've ever been in. My run times are as fast as they've been in five years (sub 7:00/mile pace). The swim will be a challenge, since I am usually a one time across the pool kind of guy. I swam last week, actually doing real laps for the first time ever. It went ok, once I figured out that if you don't breathe you get tired real fast. Go figure. I am not sure about all the gear I'll need. Trying to see what I can borrow or get somewhat inexpensively. I have a friend with a Fuji race bike. I have running shoes, will need a new pair before long, getting a new swim suit tonight, and wondering how cold the Potomac river will be in mid-Sept. I suppose I might need a wetsuit.

Anyway, it said introduce yourself. I am Larry, first time tri-athlete. Attitude is somewhere between "I hope I finish" and "Time to kick some ass" :-)

Regards,

Larry

Welcome to BT, and awesome attitude. One note on the bike - make sure, before riding your friend's bike, that it actually fits you. Bikes, like clothes, come in different sizes and if it's the wrong size, it can mess you up. You also have some incredible run times! Have fun training and tri-ing!

What race are you doing in September?  Sweet run times, the swim will progress...just have to do more laps and build in some frequency to start building that swim endurace.  You should have plenty of time b/w now and September to get some good swimming in.

Good luck!

The race website is www.thenationstriathlon.com There are some issues left for the organizers to sort through, but hopefully it will come together. I feel that it will be an amazing and memorable event to be part of, especially as a first timer.

The swimming is going well so far. I checked the average water temperatures for the Potomac. The minimum is 65, max is 78, and the mean is 73. I imagine the start will be early. I have very low body fat and typically won't get in the pool until it's near 80. I'm thinking of using a wetsuit, if allowed. Or is that unnecessary? Any recommendations would be appreciated

Thanks to you and watergirl for the encouragement. Time to go run.
