Anyone know the area or grew up there? I grew up (58 and still growing up) on the beaches there and still visit my folks in Toms River every year, spending all day on the beach. I am so saddened by the destruction, esp the boardwalk and amusement park. I can't believe there are houses in the streets and 1-3ft of sand 2-3 blocks away from beach! I know they will rebuild but still a very sad day. The fact that the ferris wheel is still standing is amazing to me and shows just how sturdy and safe a wheel it is. Interested to hear your thoughts if you know the area.......Tom

I no longer live in the area, but grew up in Bayville.  Just across the bay from Seaside and spent much of my youth there.  The pictures are just unreal to me.  Seeing the places I used to frequent just reduced to ruble is heart breaking.

On the plus side it looks like some iconic places are still standing. Midway is still in tact.  Sawmill is still standing, but cant tell if there is any damage.

The wife and I were talking about going to see our folks this Sunday and seeing the devastation first hand. Although, I am not sure we would be able to make it onto the Island. Plus it may not be all that safe.  I heard earlier today, there are natural gas leaks at various places on the Island.

I saw a photo earlier today of the Mantaloking bridge, which basically ends in water and has become a inlet from the ocean.  Basically the middle of the island washed away. I suppose this is similar to what happened between Assetauge and Ocean City a long time ago.

My MIL lives in Lavellette, in between Seaside Heights and the Mantoloking bridge.  We go back every summer.

This link has great aerial views post storm of the entire coastline.

My MIL evacuated and is safe.  Her home appears from the aerial views to still be there, but she has not been able to get back to see what condition it is in.

I've never been to the area, but even though the Ferris Wheel withstood a hurricane it still does not change my opinion on Ferris Wheels.  They still scare the crap out of me.
