What have you used? What works well?

NOT looking for anything like Boost Mobile or anything.

I only need: Some talk minutes, a few texts (or 5-10 cent fee per). I'm going to have very limited cell phone access at Basic and OCS, and I just want to be able to communicate.

Looking at net10, h2owireless, red packet, simple mobile, tracphone type stuff. Basic phone, no camera...

I do a halloween play every fall and I dont want to use my cell phone for reservations and questions as Im not the only one to use the phone.  I used tracphone and was pretty happy with it.  The only problem I had is I let the subscription run out on my first one so the SIM card died and had to buy a new one last year.

$20 gives you 60 minutes of talk over 90 days, $30 is 120 minutes.  The trick is to re-up before your date runs out.  And you cant but two 90 day services and activate at once.  I think you can only add days during the last 30 days...

I paid $10 for the first one and $20 for the second (flip)  and they came w/ 30 minutes of air time.

3 texts = 1 minute of talk

Thanks!

I've been poking around and I'm leaning towards PlatinumTel. It's $0.05 per minute and $0.02 per text. $50 will activate my account for 180 days and I'll pay those rates from that, and I can add as I go, if I need to.  It'll cover me for the full duration of training.

Prices like that make me want to drop the smart phone all together

TracFone is the only cell phone I've ever had.

It works just fine for my needs and it is cheap. I have unlimited service days so I don't have to buy more days every 3 months or something. When I run out of minutes I buy more otherwise no extra expense, no monthly fee, really no hassle. I just upgraded in July because my older TracFone was not getting very good service when I was out on my bike and it was not text friendly. I love the new phone and customer service transferred all of my minutes and service days to the new phone with no problems.

Hope that helps!

Tracfone.  My wife and I have used this for years.  Right now, it's pretty easy to find a phone and 1 year activation with triple minutes for around $100.  I just upgraded to the LG 840g (it's under the tree).  It was $99 with a year's subscription via Amazon.

With triple minutes, I will end up adding 1200 minutes when I activate the phone and an addtiona 1000+ minutes I will carry over.  For Tracfone, 1 unit = 1 minute of talk time.  It is .3 units per text and 1.5 units to send a picture.

I use www.pagepluscellular.com.  For $12/month I get 250 Minutes, 250 Text/Picture* Messages , 10 MB Data, and it is on Verizon's network, so I get service everywhere I go.  I had to buy a $80 phone, but that was paid for in like 3 month from the cost savings over t-mobile.
