Subject: Impact on performance of donating blood
So with all the threads wondering about the impact on performance when donating blood, here's my report.

I donated yesterday about 5 p.m. One pint.

Went for 40 minute moderate pace run today just before lunch.

Distance covered was about a quarter mile less than normal.

However, I couldn't keep my HR down. It was 10-15 beats higher than normal.

On a side note, when they checked my blood pressure and HR they had to get a supervisor's approval to go forward because my HR was below 40 BPM.

Had a similar experience, supervisor and all.  They did however advice me against activity that day.  The following day(s) nothing changed tho.

I haven't noticed this problem (yet) and I donate double-reds every time. (Just trying to look out for my fellow Oneg's out there) .

How was your hydration after the donation?

Hydration was fine before and after donating. I've donated before and not really noticed a change in performance the next day. But I hadn't really been looking before.

A pint of blood isn't that much, but with the loss in volume, it makes sense for your HR to be a little higher. There are a lot of factors that could go into a 10-15 bpm increase, but I'm sure the blood donation make some impact.

if you train and race seriously you are hurting yourself big time when it comes to donating blood. aside from the added strain on your body, you are losing a big chunk of what yo uhave been working to acheive with training (think blood doping, and all those healthy cells you are pulling away).

that being said, it is a very good thing to do and can deff help someone else out.

My HR is always elevated after blood donation. Take it easy afterwards and don't worry about it. My theory is that you've lost red blood cells which carry oxygen, so your heart needs to pump more of the thinned out blood to get the same number of red blood cells to your muscles.
